چکیده

Background Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is known to be heritable and often shows a concomitant aortopathy which was thought also to be present in some family members. While one recent study reported normal ascending aortic diameters in family members of the general BAV population, little is known about aortic function in such family members. We used advanced aortic cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and peripheral blood analysis to assess evidence for an underlying aortopathy in family members of bicuspid aortic valve patients.

Evolution of Precision Medicine and Surgical Strategies for Bicuspid Aortic Valve-Associated Aortopathy

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a common congenital cardiac malformation affecting 1-2% of people. BAV results from fusion of two adjacent aortic valve cusps, and is associated with dilatation of the aorta, known as bicuspid valve associated aortopathy. Bicuspid valve aortopathy is progressive and associated with catastrophic clinical events, such as aortic dissection and rupture. Therefore, fre...

Bicuspid aortic valve aortopathy: genetics, pathophysiology and medical therapy.

The association between ascending aortic aneurysm (AA) and bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) has been well established. Different genetic, haemodynamic and cardiovascular risk factors have been implicated in the development and progression of AA. However, to date, definite conclusions cannot be drawn regarding the exact molecular, cellular and haemodynamic mechanisms causing BAV-associated aortopathy...

Bicuspid aortic valve and associated aortopathy: an update.

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common form of congenital heart disease and most such patients develop cardiovascular complications over time. Recent studies have shed light on one of the most common of these complications, BAV-associated aortopathy. Two distinct BAV phenotypes have been identified, which may have different causes of their associated aortopathy. Increasing evidence sugg...

Clinical Implication of Aortic Wall Biopsy in Aortic Valve Disease with Bicuspid Valve Pathology

BACKGROUND Although unique aortic pathology related to bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) has been previously reported, clinical implications of BAV to aortopathy risk have yet to be investigated. We looked for potential differences in matrix protein expressions in the aortic wall in BAV patients. METHODS Aorta specimens were obtained from 31 patients: BAV group (n=27), tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) ...
